Years ago, about a month after I started writing in my Joy Journal, I discovered this truth and wrote it down:


I can always find something to make me feel discontent or uneasy… always. And it turns out that I can always find something that makes me feel peaceful or joyful... always. I have seen an enormous shift in my life by deciding to spend the majority of my time concentrating on what makes me feel peaceful. And, I can hardly believe that it was really that simple.



I think one of the biggest problems with getting out of the lower spiral is that we are often looking for some big major change that will turn things around and make us feel completely better. What I’ve learned though is that the key is to train ourselves to look for anything that makes us feel good – even if it’s just for a minute. That singing child on the internet may bring you a fleeting moment of joy, but it was there! Don’t make it a footnote – you felt it – build on it – relish it – try to find more.


If you’ve been feeling sad for a long time, believe me, I’m not trying to make light of what you’re feeling. I know that there are real and serious disappointments in life. I’m just here to tell you that the world misses you – your friends and family miss you – they miss your light, your edge, that unique you that they love. You are too much of an incredible person to hide your light from the world.


PS. If this has been going on for a while, you may need to seek counseling. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! It’s ok to get some help!
