Affirmation:

Just because the future is uncertain, doesn’t mean I should fear it.

Action Plan:

I do this thing I like to call “pre-worrying” - that’s worrying about something before it even happens. You too?! Yep, I thought so… Well, never did I pre-worry more than when it came to the dentist. My fears kept me from going for years … hoping time and neglect would be sufficient oral care … turns out, um … it wasn’t…

So, I decided to do some work in this area, and I discovered that (surprise!) my fears were of what might happen … not what was actually happening. Don’t get me wrong, I understand there is something legit to fear; that drill is whirring next to some soft fuckin’ tissue! And, it is damn uncomfortable, but let’s face it, the shit we imagine is much worse than it actually is. So, I created this self talk visualization that I use before and during my dental visits:

I’m so proud of myself for taking good care of myself. And I’m so grateful I have access to wonderful preventive health care. When I hear the drill, I close my eyes and imagine the dentist is an ice sculptor; he’s using the drill to make a beautiful ice carving for me. I can see it taking shape and it’s an ethereal angel – her wings are spread wide and I can see the blue sky through them. There is a spark of yellow sunlight glinting off of the peace sign in her right hand (yes, she’s a hippy angel – c’mon, this is my visualization, after all!). I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for his skill, his attention to detail and his caring.

So, if there’s something you’re pre-worrying about, here’s a crazy thought, why not imagine the BEST possible outcome for the future instead of the worst? See if you can create your own visualization to envision an artist deftly crafting your future right now … a future that is made only for your greater good … for THE greater good… And now you can just … chill … oh, and don’t forget to floss…
