I refuse to beat myself up! I promise to treat myself the same way I would treat a dear friend … with grace, care, love and compassion.
In his book, The Untethered Soul, Michael Singer described our egos as a roommate that lives inside our heads. Well, I’m here to tell you that sometimes that roommate can be a bitch.
Today, say something loving to yourself whenever you hear your roommate begin to bitch about something (even better if you write it in your journal). Be your own champion and refuse to let her take over! Lovingly tell yourself nice things that you would say to a friend who came to you and said they felt badly about themselves.
If you’re stuck on what to say, here are some examples of things I have said to myself (Apparently, they all need to start with, “Oh, honey…”):
“Oh, honey, I can see why you’re having a hard time with this. You’re taking on a lot.”
“Oh, honey, that’s not true. You are an amazing person and I feel so lucky to know you.”
“Oh, honey, I wish there was something I could do to make these bad feelings go away. Just know that I love you and I am here for you no matter what.”
Oh, and “Damn, girl” also works:
“Damn, girl, you took on that roommate like a boss! Mama don’t play….”
Spiral level: ALL
Use when feeling: down on self, mad at self
