I can get something done even if I’m feeling scattered.

Action Plan:

Some days I just can’t focus! It’s often because I have a lot of open items on my to-do list and I’m overwhelmed and scattered. And especially if none of the items is particularly pressing or deadline-driven ... and bonus points if it's just a bunch of shit I don't like doing. So, I do the only natural thing you do when you’re overwhelmed with too many things to do – I don't do any of them!

When I’m feeling like this, I waste SO MUCH time just thinking about all that I have to do … and where to start … and how I really don’t want to do any of it … and …. well, maybe if I just read for another hour, I’ll know what to do… Yep, this is super helpful when there’s a lot to do. It’s like putting the “pro” in procrastination.

When this happened to me recently, I suddenly remembered about something I had read once (and for the life of me, I can’t remember where) about having a “stream of consciousness day.” Here’s an example:

I walk into the bedroom and notice the bed is unmade, so I make it. While I’m doing that I see some socks on the floor and bring them into the laundry room. In the laundry room, I see some folded towels that need to be taken downstairs. On my way to taking them downstairs, I walk by my office and see the beading I have left on my craft table. I set the towels down and sit down and bead for a little. I get thirsty after a while and decide to go downstairs for some water. I take the folded towels with me on the way down. When I get the water I realize I’m hungry. I make a sandwich and watch the next episode of Skin Wars. After the show is over, I put my dishes away and run the dishwasher. I go to the bathroom and see that the toilet needs to be cleaned and clean it …

It’s kind of like the “If you Give a Mouse a Cookie” method of getting shit done. The idea behind this is to just do whatever attracts your attention next. Don’t think about it, just do it – whatever it is.

Now, of course, don’t do this if you have a pressing deadline for anything. If that report is due in an hour, then stop messin’ around here with me and get that shit done – just sayin’. Maybe save this for the weekend, when you have “free time” but you also have that seemingly endless list of things that need to get done.

The only thing that I would suggest is that you limit yourself on anything that you can get lost in – only 1 episode of Skin Wars; only 30 minutes on Pinterest (and set a timer), 1 hour of beading, etc.

Just don’t get too caught up in finishing everything or being particularly efficient. Just do what is in front of you at the moment - if it needs to be taken care of and you see it, just do it right then. You might not get everything done, but at least you’ll get some things done. And, you got to sprinkle some things you like to do in there as well. And at least you checked cleaning the toilet off the list – now you don’t have to procrastinate on that again for another couple of weeks! Woohoo!
