Action Plan:


I already know what you’re going to say … it’s going to start with “but,” right? “But, sometimes I don’t have a choice. Sometimes things are bad or scary or just complete shit.”


And, to that I say, yep, you’re right. Sometimes things are just complete shit. But, you can always choose what you decide to focus on … always. Most fears and sadness are focused either on the future or the past. The key is to focus on RIGHT NOW. And unless you’re reading this while you’re being held at gunpoint, I’m guessing your RIGHT NOW is not too shabby.


If you’re struggling with some fear or sadness, start by really sitting with those feelings. Ask, “What are you actually afraid of in this situation?” or What’s making you so sad?” Let your emotions express themselves. Write it down and give them the respect they deserve – they’re just trying to protect you, after all.


Now write a response. If there’s something you can do to change something, write that down too. And then close with something like this: “Dear Fear/Sadness, thank you for trying to protect me. I’m so sorry you’re sad/scared. You don’t have to worry any more – I got this and I’m in charge. Right now, I’m going to focus on peace, including….”


“Laughter” – Watch or read something that makes you laugh out loud.

“Gratitude/Joy” – Make a list of things you are grateful for right now.

“Friendship/Love” – Contact a friend. Tell them how much you love them.


Even if it changes your focus for only a short time, remember that you had the power to do that … and you always do….
