Every act, good or bad, is a step closer to becoming more myself ... even when I fall flat on my face.
Making a mistake, especially if it’s public, is pretty much the reason I am afraid to try new things. In fact, finishing and publishing these affirmations scares the shit out of me! So let me share something that happened that’s helping me change the way I feel about mistakes.
I have never played a musical instrument and have always wanted to, so I took a course to learn how to play the Native American flute. In one of the first few classes, we were each asked to do an exercise individually. When it was my turn, I messed up and made a horrendous sound with the flute. Then, to add to my mortification, the instructor, who is a lovely man, started to laugh. I could feel tears welling up in the back of my throat and said, “Are you laughing at me?” And, he said, “Yes, I was wondering who was going to be the first to make that mistake. Everyone will do that at some point.”
It took me a while to see this clearly, but, once I set my ego aside, I could see what a gift he gave me. He basically said, “Yep, you messed up. Big fucking deal! People do it all the time.” What a relief!
As Albert Einstein said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” So today, just give yourself a break. Laugh at your mistakes – they happen … to everyone! This quest for self awareness and improvement is completely wasted if we don’t also accept ourselves for who we are! It is not a quest for perfection, but for compassion and self love.
